Integrating STEAM within the IPC (MP3)

This session is all about how to spark a lifelong love of science, technology, engineering, art and maths - better known under the umbrella of "STEAM".  Hands-on, collaborative and fun, you will learn how to "upcycle" cardboard boxes and simple household materials, turning them into models for anything - trains, planes, puppets and more - and how this relates to key IPC learning objectives.  You will build with the same materials, tools and techniques that can be taught to primary-age children, to get them engaged in their learning through the creation of some awesome products!  By the end of this session, you will go away with some practical ideas, resources and methods for integrating STEAM into your lessons.

Spelling

This workshop supports teachers to plan spelling activities into their existing planning sequences by using it as a tool to develop vocabulary and apply spelling rules. The training looks at how children learn how to spell and identifies how to combat some of the difficulties children have with spelling.

Philosophy Circles in MP2 and MP3

In this workshop we will be particularly focusing on how teachers can increase the independence of the children and accelerate the development of self-regulation and delegated facilitation, so that both the quantity and quality of talk can be maximised. Again, lots of skill-building as well as stimuli and activities geared to this age group. Also work on analysis through identifying “ingredients” of important concepts.

O Prazer da Matemática: Mágicas, Jogos, Brincadeiras, Desafios e Colaboração

Please note: This session will be delivered in Portuguese. If required, a translator will be provided.

Philosophy Circles: Curriculum Day

This workshop builds upon the previous days' training, open to both early years and juniors. It would give time to go through a good chunk of the year’s curriculum and identify suitable philosophical questions within the topics and texts already studied. This uses a technique called the “Philosophic Topic Processor”, first identifying concepts of broad interest which can be explored within the topic, then creating suitable questions, and then identifying or creating stimuli such as video, text or an experience which can raise the question. A final stage, of looking at what has been created and finding a “big question” that frames the topic as a whole, could be a very good touch point with your existing planning for International Primary Curriculum. This approach tends to lead to more challenging, philosophically richer questions than other forms of question-based planning.

Mathematical Talk and Questioning

Have you ever asked students to talk about their learning then found they quickly go off task?
Getting students talking about maths can be difficult but it is an essential part of embedding learning. This session will help teachers put structures and routines in place in their classroom so that meaningful talk can take place.
In addition, this course looks at how to enhance a teacher’s modelling and questioning skills and how to plan questions that challenge students and deepen their understanding. The session is practical, thought-provoking and equip teachers to put what they learn into practice the very next day.
