Educação Matemática Inclusiva / Inclusive Maths Education

Please note: This session will be delivered in Portuguese. If required, a translator will be provided.

Palavras chave: Educação Matemática Inclusiva, Quantificação, Síndrome de Down

- What activities can be developed for special needs students to help them acquire mathematical concepts
- How to deal with inclusion (pedagogical)  in relation to mathematics and social inclusion?
This workshop focuses on the evolution of the concept of natural number by students in Early Years / Early childhood education. The activities are designed to involve them in the construction of the conceptual image which may aid in the construction of the concept number. The workshop provides a detailed analysis of the interactions of three subjects within the area of Down syndrome. Activities relevant to the acquisition of the concept of number from multisensory materials will be presented and discussed.

Key words: Inclusive Maths Education, Quantification, Down Syndrome.

This workshop will emphasis how to use story and reasoning games to turn young children into “becausers”, able to form opinions, give reasons, listen carefully, agree and disagree with one another and enjoy playing around with creative ideas. Children’s talk about story develops in advance of other forms of complex talk, and so by putting them into the story, they can be more engaged in dilemmas and decisions. Lots of activities for building skills, and lots of stimuli and activities that are compelling for these ages.

O Prazer da Matemática: Mágicas, Jogos, Brincadeiras, Desafios e Colaboração / The pleasure of Mathematics: Magic, Games, Activities, Challenges and Collaboration

Please note: This session will be delivered in Portuguese. If required, a translator will be provided.

This workshop aims to present the importance of enjoying learning mathematics. The origin of enjoyment comes from the learning process itself when it becomes significant for the student and /or teacher. Maths isn’t remembering multiplication tables, formulas and procedures. It is capable of opening new horizons and for new surprising possibilities. It’s not necessary to have many technologies or didactic apparatus for quality education. A new approach is necessary to lead appreciation to this discipline and its teaching, and the consequent pleasure to teach it. Hybrid Teaching is a teaching approach that aims to enhance and alternate between different learning moments in reference to a subject. Hybrid Teaching methodologies that shall be used are “Season rotation” and “Learning Problem-based”. In this case, strategy games MathMagics, practical plays, challenges, problem solving, collective debates will be presented.

Key words: math enjoyment, hybrid teaching, problem-solving games, magic.

Philosophy Circles: Curriculum Day

This workshop builds upon the previous days' training, open to both early years and juniors. It would give time to go through a good chunk of the year’s curriculum and identify suitable philosophical questions within the topics and texts already studied. This uses a technique called the “Philosophic Topic Processor”, first identifying concepts of broad interest which can be explored within the topic, then creating suitable questions, and then identifying or creating stimuli such as video, text or an experience which can raise the question. A final stage, of looking at what has been created and finding a “big question” that frames the topic as a whole, could be a very good touch point with your existing planning for International Primary Curriculum. This approach tends to lead to more challenging, philosophically richer questions than other forms of question-based planning.

Mathematical Talk and Questioning

Have you ever asked students to talk about their learning then found they quickly go off task?
Getting students talking about maths can be difficult but it is an essential part of embedding learning. This session will help teachers put structures and routines in place in their classroom so that meaningful talk can take place.
In addition, this course looks at how to enhance a teacher’s modelling and questioning skills and how to plan questions that challenge students and deepen their understanding. The session is practical, thought-provoking and equip teachers to put what they learn into practice the very next day.

O Prazer da Matemática: Mágicas, Jogos, Brincadeiras, Desafios e Colaboração

Please note: This session will be delivered in Portuguese. If required, a translator will be provided.
